The US Equity Markets set a 4 year high last Friday following five straight weeks of strong advancement.

Since the week ending October 28th the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 528.85 points ending last Friday at 10,931.62 up 5.08%. If the Dow Jones kept this pace for a full year it would gain over 60%!

The Beat Goes On

While Real Estate is cooling off a bit the stock market is on the rise. Reports showed the U.S. economy continued to exhibit strong signs of growth, as productivity nearly doubled during the third quarter of 2005, labor costs came down, and stocks rallied for most of the week. Against this backdrop of expansion, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board reinforced its concern over inflation by raising short-term interest rates for the twelfth consecutive time.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that personal income was up 1.7% and spending rose 0.5%, which spurred a rise in shares of retail companies. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labor said productivity rose at a 4.1% annual rate in the third quarter, compared with a 2.1% increase in the second quarter, while labor costs dropped 0.5%, the first decrease since the second quarter of 2004. The Labor Department also said the number of first-time unemployment claims fell by 8,000 last week to a two-month low because of fewer hurricane-related filings.

The Labor Department reported Friday morning that U.S. nonfarm payrolls grew by 56,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate dropped to 5%, down from September’s 5.1%. Oil finished the week at $60.58 a barrel.

Competition Brings Out The Best

Competition

Two of the most competitive human battlefields are Pro Sports and Wall Street where there is no room for second place.

If you purchased a major league football team would you hire yourself as the team Coach, Quarterback, or any position effecting the success of the team? Of course you wouldn't. Instead you would seek to build a winning team by hiring the best coach and players your money could buy.

Do you treat your investments the same way? Do you seek out the very best investment minds in the business and hire them? If not, why not? Are you acting as your own Coach? Are you the star Quarterback? Would you hire yourself if you were building an all star investment team? Are you serious about your investments? If so, you would hire the Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods of Wall Street to manage your money.

That's what I do, and that's what you should be doing. I'll help you hire the best Money Managers in the business, so you don't come in a poor (pun intended) second.

The 8th Wonder of the World - Compound Interest

Compounding

We've all heard that doubling a penny every day for a month grows to $10,737,418.24 but the same thing happens over 20, 30, and 40 years in real life. By using what has been referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World - Compound Interest, you can achieve the same result in your net worth and there is still time to do it!

One way to do so is dollar cost averaging. If an investor dutifully invested $250 per month every month with a pension fund quality Money Manager through up and down markets and averaged a 12% annualized return for 30 years the value of their account would be $882,478, in 40 years it would be $2,970,605.

Up the monthly investment to $300 and in 30 years the investor will have $1,058,974 and in 40 years $3,564726.

The stock market has averaged about 12% since inception so basing your expected return on 12% annualize is a realistic scenario. Thirty and forty year time frames are also realistic as you will discover next!

Life Expectancy

In 1900 the average life expectancy for an American was 47.3 years.

In 1998 the average life expectancy for an American was 76.7 years.

A woman today who reaches the age of 50 can expect to see her 92nd birthday.

Bottom Line

We all have a lot more time than we might have thought to invest and grow rich. The key is consistency of investing, quality investing, and time.

I can help you with quality investing. The other two are up to you!

While Baron Capital Management covers the spectrum of investments and services our major focus is on Professional Money Management.

Unlike stocks that exhibit great risk individually (recall Enron -7th largest company in America by capitalization at the time of it's demise) Professional Money Managers are all about maximizing returns while minimizing risks. They do this through diversification much like mutual funds. However, there are many advantageous to using a Professional Money Manager Vs. a Mutual Fund.

Here are three advantages to focus on for now.

  • Performance - Professional Money Managers as a group have out performed Mutual Funds as a group.
  • Risk Management - I constantly hear from folks how much they made from this or that investment but virtually no one has been able to define to me the risk they took to achieve the results they got. Risk matters. At the end of the day you not only want to make money but KEEP IT!
  • Time Value - I'm amazed how many people want to trade the market themselves. Why? I hope it's for entertainment value because to be even good you will have to make it a career--very time consuming. The Professional Money Managers I use are what I refer to as the Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods of my industry. So much better than the other pros they define their own league and the management fees they charge are a screaming deal! I wouldn't think of going one on one against Michael Jordan--why should you?

When it comes to investing think about the fact that you are going up against the greatest pros in the industry in the most competitive game in the world. Wouldn't you rather hire the pros to play the game for you versus taking them on? If that isn't enough of a reason then consider your time. While you are doing what you do best or enjoying what you like to do your Professional Money Manager is working for you. Now that's leverage

One last word. Anyone can make money in a bull market. You discover who really understands investing during a bear or flat market. You'll know who the real pros are when everyone else is melting down around them. I've spent the better part of my 18 years identifying Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Let me help you put them to work for you!

You will also find a link to this weeks “Soiree Invitation” and a link to the “Soiree Archives” including photos. By the way, the 2005 Soiree archives are now up-to-date! Check them out by clicking here

You will also find links to this months “Private Meeting Schedule” for those of you who would like to sit down directly with Baron Benham and a world class Money Manager. Baron Capital Management currently works with only three out of thousands. They are the best of the best and usually about once a month one of their representatives are in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. To schedule a meeting simply go to the “Private Meeting Schedule” page and complete the short form.

Finally, a new link called “Wants and Needs” has been posted. It is here that you may post your unique wants and needs. Over the years hardly a day has gone by that someone hasn't ask me for help finding something or wanting me to help them sell something – like a Jaguar sports car! Now whether large or small and pretty much regardless of what it is, you may post your wants and needs. My data base is growing every day and today reaches out to over 3,500 successful people. Most are local but many are spread out all over the globe. Now everyone can quickly click on the “Wants and Needs” link and check out what has been posted. To cover the cost of this service there will be a small posting fee. The fee will vary depending upon the scope of the work in posting. Those interested should contact Baron Capital's web master directly. Email trey@baroncapital.com, Trey will be happy to assist you.

I want to thank all of you for your continued friendship, business, and fun times at the Soiree. Over the years Baron Capital Management and the Soirees have grown and evolved. The introduction of this new format is one more example.
