Most folks over 40 (the rest of us have to rely on documentaries
and listening to our elders) are very much aware of who the great
Olga Korbut is and what an incredible impact she had on the world
in the 1972 World Olympics.

The cold war was very cold indeed with nuclear proliferation
running out of control.  Détente was the buzz word of the day
but it was Olga Korbut who gave it meaning.  Olga melted the
hearts of all those who watched her perform as she humanized
the struggle between east and west.

Olga, who immigrated to the United States in 1991 and now lives
in Atlanta, is in town to promote the "Scottsdale Gymnastics &
Cheerleading School" owned by fellow Soiree friends, Arthur and
Linda Cooper.  Olga will be teaching the first of a two week long
summer camp for kids.  It was Arthur's idea to feature Olga as our
Soiree Special Guest.   So when you see Arthur and Linda please
thank them for sharing Olga with us.  If you have kids and would
like to keep them busy in a fun, healthy, productive way at a low cost
you should consider enrolling them in the Cooper's two week long
Gymnastic Summer Camp!

Following is a bullet point list of "some" of Olga's incredible achievements.

  • 1975: Rewarded with the “Golden Tuning Fork” and named the Women of the Year in San Remo, Monaco by Unesko.
  • 1976: Olga Korbut competed in the Word Championship's. Won 5 medals 2 gold, 3silver.
  • 1976: Montreal Olympic Games: Won 2 medals at Olympics 1 gold, 1 silver.
In 1975, the United Nations named Olga "Women of the Year"
for her ability to bring the world together, and awarded her
the "Gold Tuning Fork".

Also in 1975, Olga was selected as "Athlete of the Year" by
Women's Sport Foundation.

Olga continued to amaze the athletic community when she won
her fourth Olympic Gold Medal at Montreal in 1976, after
which she made the transition to coaching the Soviet team.  Thus
leaving the industry of competitive gymnastics as an undisputed
champion and a pioneer of such advanced techniques, that many
of her techniques are still considered "impossible".

In 1988 Olga Korbut was inducted into the International
Gymnastics Hall of Fame as the first inductee.

Here are a few pictures to give you a flavor for the incredible
talent and achievements of Olga Korbut.  Olga and her coach,
Renald Knysh, invented numerous moves now used in gymnastics
and a few that only Olga has been able to achieve to this day.

It is with great pleasure that,  the great former Soviet Union Gymnast,
Olga Korbut, will be my Special Guest this week.

Please plan on joining us to socialize and meet new friends!
