The Improv Comedy Club opened 12 years ago in
down-town Tempe on University at Rural. The
headliner
for opening night was Jerry Seinfeld back before
there
was a Jerry Seinfeld Show. Mr. Mar bought the club
8
years ago at a time when comedy clubs were in a
slump.
Mr. Mar turned the club around by bringing in the
big
names(Dana Carvey, Bill Mar,) in the summer time
when
traditionally this was a slow time for the Tempe Improv.
Mr. Mar's background has always been in the
management
side of comedy clubs. He has opened clubs in San
Francisco
Los Angeles and San Diego.
The Improv is open Thursday through Sunday nights.
Show-
time is 8:00pm every night with a second show at 10:00pm
on Friday and Saturday nights. The
Improv has a full service
restaurant and bar. Dinner reservations are accepted and
require that your party arrive between 6pm and 7pm.
The
closer to 6pm the better your seating will be. The menu
has
has a nice selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and
entrees. The club itself seats around 420 guests and
has
a state-of-the-art sound, light and video systems. The
club
is also available for Special Events, presentations,
meetings,
banquets or any other corporate gathering.
This week beginning on Thursday the 15th the Improv
will
feature Wayne Brady and Friends performing "Who's
Line
Is It" live. Starting the 22nd of June, David Allen
Grier from
"In Living Color" fame will be
performing. Recently, the Tempe
Improv has been getting national attention from shows
such
as David Spade's Live HBO Special and Dana Carvey's Young
Comedians Special. Mr. Mar says since Phoenix is so
close
to Los Angeles and the audiences are so good the
comedians really enjoy performing and
trying out new
material at the club.
