Special recognition this week goes to North American Capital Timing (NACT). NACT has earned the title as my best performing money manager! Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Albany, New York, NACT specializes in mutual fund and variable annuity management. I first discovered NACT while researching a potential clients wish list. This client (a real estate developer) was sitting on over $1,000,000 at the bank. He hated the banks low interest rate but didn't know of any other investment alternatives that satisfied his requirements. He had talked to many investment brokers but they all failed the challenge. What this gentlemen wanted was a 12% annual rate of return, his money liquid (so he could move fast if he wanted to buy land for his real estate development business), and low volatility/risk. Due to this gentlemens low tolerance for volatility/risk he would not consider investing in the stock market. This left me with bonds as the only vehicle that was also liquid. The only bonds that would come close to a 12% annual return were high yielding bonds (otherwise known as junk bonds) and the only way to reduce risk was to purchase a professionally managed high yielding mutual fund. This was great except we were short of the 12% target and the volatility/risk was still too high. That's when I discovered NACT. NACT specializes in managing volatility/risk. Through management of volatility/risk NACT had actually added substantially to returns net of fees. I presented my findings and invested over $1,000,000. The client ended up with better than 14% on his money and as feared pulled his money out to buy land and to build spec houses. That was five years ago. At that time NACT specialized in bond management. Two years ago they added stocks. I decided to take a wait and see attitude and didn't recommend their stock programs the first year and a half. NACT is an add on manager. This means that if you already have your funds invested in a mutual fund or annuity it may be possible to hire NACT to manage your money at these funds.
