LISA R. CHOW is Desert Dance Theatre's co-artistic director,
company manager, choreographer, performer and educator.
She is originally from Greenville, Mississippi, and received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Arizona State University.

In 1990, she received ASU's Outstanding Alumna award for
"A Tribute to Ethnic Women in the Arts and Sciences." She
has studied from dance masters on both East and West Coasts
and has studied many modern dance techniques such as Graham,
Horton, Nickolais, Cunningham, Hawkins and more.



Since 1983, Lisa has toured with the Desert Dance Theatre
throughout Arizona and Mexico, as well as in New Mexico,
Texas, New York, Portland, Washington, and Nevada. She
has choreographed for the company's repertory and major
multi-disciplinary theme-related works as well as for children's
programs in collaboration with String Sounds (String Quartet).

In 1999, Ms. Chow was commissioned to premiere a new work
at The Mulberry Street Theater in New York City, funded by
the Jerome Foundation (St. Paul, MN) for the Mulberry Street
Theater's 'Ear to the Ground' series.

Lisa is the co-founder and co-artistic director of Crossroads
Performance Group along with her husband, Step Raptis,
performing interdisciplinary music and dance projects throughout
the state of Arizona and regionally since 1989. As a vocalist, she
has performed as the lead singer in the local bands: Zingaro,
Chant, and MIXIT (world beat music).



Chow received the Chairman's Circle Arts Award 2000 for
Artists/Educators of the Year from the Scottsdale Cultural
Council and was also awarded the Teen Spirit Award from
Motivating the Teen Spirit and Empowering the Human Spirit
Foundation.

On the Executive Board of the Arizona Dance Arts Alliance,
Lisa serves as the First Vice-President and has been the
coordinator of the Annual Arizona Contemporary Dance Festival
for 2000, 2001, 2002; and is the coordinator for the 2003 festivals
in Scottsdale, Tucson and Sedona.

ABOUT DESERT DANCE THEATRE

Desert Dance Theatre is a contemporary dance company which
was founded in 1979. The company offers a variety of quality
programs to schools and communities which are inspiring,
entertaining and educational. Local performance venues include:
Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Chandler Center for the Arts,
Orpheum Theatre, and more.

Under the artistic direction of Lisa R. Chow and Marion Kirk
Jones, Desert Dance Theatre has a wide variety of dance in
the current repertory, which range from classical, comical,
abstract and theatrical. The company is comprised of experienced
performers, choreographers and enthusiastic educators who
strive to bring the openness, spontaneity and diversity of dance
to the public. The company offers community and school
residencies with a variety of outreach services, including:
master classes, lecture demonstrations and performances.

Desert Dance Theatre also specializes in theme-related programs
which focus on cultural diversity and about the lives of prominent
people who have fought for freedom in America through the form
of music/dance/dramas. We have completed a trilogy of civil
rights productions, "Free At Last," "Sister Moses: The Story
of Harriet Tubman," and "Judgments," each of which may be
featured along with current repertory. The company has also
collaborated with String Sounds (string quartet), touring and
performing thousands of children's performances in elementary
schools since 1985.

Through its Guest Choreographer Series, the company also
performs commissioned works by choreographers of national
and international acclaim. The new works continue to enhance
the diversity of the current repertory.

As a non-profit organization, Desert Dance Theatre has received
grant awards and support from foundations, corporations, arts
councils, as well as other public and private sponsors and contributors.
The company has been on the roster of the Arizona Commission on
the Arts since 1981, and is a member of the Arizona Dance Arts
Alliance, Tempe Arts Coalition, Western Arts Alliance and Arts
Northwest.
