The Bright Star Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization
established by Dawn M. Purtee to promote charitable causes
through the highly profiled careers of entertainment celebrities.
Bright Star's mission is to create awareness, raise money, and
educate the public about charitable causes, in joint effort with
individual celebrities.
Bright Star Foundation President, Dawn Purtee believes in the
gift of giving. She founded the BRIGHT STAR FOUNDATION,
a multifaceted, nonprofit organization that works to benefit
charitable causes through the high-profile careers of entertainers.
"My earliest memories are of my parents and their generous
nature. It was a family event to take food and clothing over
to the Catholic Charities Organization. We would help stock
the shelves and clean the place. I learned how to treat all
people with compassion and love. My parents taught me there
is no greater love than the giving of self," she says with a smile.
With a background in public relations, artist management and
charity work, Ms. Purtee believed the pairing of musicians
and charities was a natural. “No one can dispute the fact
that celebrities bring recognition, awareness and money to good
causes. However, it can be expensive for a charity to fly a
celebrity to an event, pay for travel arrangements and lodging.
But since musicians spend so much of their time out on tour,
their Bright Star charity makes them the PERFECT spokesperson.”
As Dawn put it, “This is not about raising funds for one large
charity corporation. It’s about contributing to the local charities,
their people and their needs in the individual towns along
the entertainers tour route.” Along with funds raised by the
celebrity endorsement, the increased media attention created for
the local charity serves as a springboard for that organization to
become a force in their community long after the artist leaves town.

“The demands on an artist are unbelievable!” says Purtee.
“An artist’s publicist’s job is to promote the artists musical
career, and will include charitable promotions only if the
charity has come to the artist’s management. However,
there is no one in the artist’s team who solely represents
and handles their charitable interests. Bright Star allows
the artist to maximize their charitable involvement and
works with the charities on a very personal basis. We
provide an incredible service to the artists team", says Purtee,
“freeing them to do what they do best and still have the
artists charitable passions looked after. Again, it’s WIN-WIN”.

Some of the additional artists affiliated with Bright Star are
Journey, DEFAULT, Sammy Hagar, Country Artist Michael
Peterson, Kenny Rogers, and Greg Crowe. Dawn is looking
to sign up a major artist a month as well as obtain national
corporate sponsors to continue the expansion of Bright Star.
“Sponsors will be our most important benefactor,” she says.
“Sponsorship dollars will allow us to hire reps to oversee
entertainers accounts and to maximize their celebrity
endorsement of the charity. It will also assist with shipping
costs of autographed merchandise, telephone, printing costs, etc.
Such sponsors as Campbell Soup, Kellogg’s and the Country
Music Association have already seen the benefits of lending
their names and funds to this worthy foundation. They get
to be affiliated with a respected artist, and they get the public
appreciation and awareness of their product/corporation by
raising money’s for worthwhile charities in small towns all over
the world. Again, WIN-WIN. Everything is on a volunteer
grass roots basis," explains Purtee, “we are constantly
striving to develop work teams like our marketing team, video
production team and publicity team.” Dawn is always looking
for volunteers to bring their own strengths, passions and skills
to the table. “This foundation enables people to become stars
in their own right by getting them involved in a diverse
organization that reaches so many different people and causes.”
Purtee’s philosophy is ‘take a star and make them shine’. “Maybe
I should put that on my business card," she smiles.
