Nick
Lowery
Philanthropist, Talk Show Host
You truly have to be an Angel
to keep in mind the serious needs of others, then live and
act accordingly to maintain a great image as a role model
and youth mentor. But that is the side of Nick Lowery that
transends the rough persona of a professional Football player.
Nick has set an example off the field, raising money and awareness for the disabled through the "Kick with Nick" program for United Cerebral Palsy, the longest-running player fundraising program in NFL history. This demonstrates commitment in what you believe in by always giving back to the community.
In 1993, he won the NFL Players Association's most prestigious award, the Byron R. "Whizzer" White Humanitarian Award. His "Adult Role Models for Youth" program has evolved into "YouthFriends" through the YMCA, connecting over 13,000 young people with 3,000 volunteers in the Greater Kansas City area.
Through Nick's experience working with American Indian tribes, extensive work with inner-city African Americans, Hispanic youth, as well as the Disabled, he points out that America's future is woven into the diversity of its collective fabric. All cultures - whether in Afghanistan, Iraq, inner-city Chicago, or The Pine Ridge Reservation - are healed from within by achieving a powerful balance of tradition with a forward-looking leadership that breeds not only survival skills, but an entrepreneurial, problem solving spirit.
Truly healthy communities have an effective, meaningful partnership of the Elders and its young people through initiation into adult roles in the community. Using examples such as AmeriCorps and Nation Building for Native Youth, Nick shows how America nurtures its noble soul through its unique character in working together to conquer its darker side by discovering its better angels.
By first healing from within, America can better help heal the world, Nick Lowery believes "It's not the brightness of the spotlight on you, but the intensity of the light within that is the ultimate measure of a human being."
